This book follows the history of cross stitch across the world, and then amasses 150 decorative projects. Beginning with the motifs of the Celtic and Medieval eras, the book then moves on to the more formal styles reminiscent of Victorian England. In the Folk Art section the simple patterns of the Shakers are juxtaposed with the bright ethnic designs of South America, Eastern Europe and Asia, while the Contemporary section highlights the bold modern motifs of the late twentieth century. Many of these projects use linen rather than aida, and with the use of rich threads a tapestry effect is created, resulting in sumptuous finished pieces. The finishing processes are also highly innovative, with ideas for displaying your work on cabinets, stools, firescreens, pencil boxes, bookcovers and clothing, as well as framed pictures, cushions and tablecloths.
