The Lantern Bearers

There would be no light tonight to guide the fleets of the Empire. The last of the Eagles were flying from Britain. As the fortress lantern is extinguished forever, and the last of the Roman army have set sail, Britain is left to civil war and an ever increasing threat of Saxon invasion. In 1950 her first children's book, The Queen's Story, was published and from then on she devoted her time to writing the children's historical novels which have made her such an esteemed and highly respected name in the field of children's literature. Rosemary Sutcliff died at the age of seventy-two in 1992.
