Three women. One baby. Who is the mother? One night in 1986, an abandoned baby girl is found at Heathrow airport. A year earlier, three girls, Martha, Clio and Jocasta, had met by chance at the start of a backpacking adventure. They travelled together briefly and then separated, swearing to meet again. But it would be a long time before they were reunited; not until Kate, the foundling, is a teenager, and the girls are all leading successful lives. Which of them is Kate's mother? And why was she desperate enough to do such a thing? Kate, adopted by a loving family, is desperate to find her birth mother. Engagingly stroppy, independent, with no clues to follow, no trail to pick up, and against a great deal of kindly and well-meaning advice, she refuses absolutely to give in. Gradually the four lives are drawn together. Jocasta, Martha and Clio rediscover one another and their friendship, and - against considerable odds - Kate finds what she thinks she wants.
