Dr David Seddon was formerly Professor of Development Studies at the University of East Anglia (1994 to 2006) and is currently an independent consultant, researcher and writer. He has worked in Nepal since the 1970s and has authored or co-authored a number of books and articles on the political economy of development in Nepal, including 'Nepal in Crisis'. 'Peasants & Workers in Nepal', The Struggle for Basic Needs in Nepal', 'The People's War in Nepal: left perspectives', 'In Hope and in Fear: living through the People's War in Nepal', 'The Muslim Communities of Nepal', and, most recently, 'Rural Unrest in Nepal'.
Among other subjects, he has devoted considerable attention to the issue of foreign labour migration and the remittance economy of Nepal, and, with two Nepali colleagues (Dr. Jagannath Adhikari and Dr. Ganesh Gurung), he authored the pioneering book on this topic 'The New Lahures' (2001). Recently, again with Dr. Adhikari and Dr. Gurung, he has published, with Adroit Publishers, an up-dated version of this book, including a consideration of foreign migration and remittances in the year of covid (2020-2021).
