Grandfather is the story of a 'Babu of Nayanjore', Kailashchandra, who is driven to extreme poverty because of his extravagant lifestyle and has to finally leave his mansion and settle in Kolkata along with his granddaughter Kusum. Kailashbabu finds it difficult to forget his glorious zamindari days and talks about it at every other occasion. Everybody is fond of Kailashbabu except for the narrator who finds him boastful and pretentious. He, therefore, plays a trick on him to make him look foolish. While he makes fun of Kailashbabu's foolishness, Kusum watches everything and is hurt.
