Buddhist sculpture in clay

This is a sumptuously illustrated book with a really nice combination of travelogue and scholarly text. As a repeat visitor to Ladakh and nearby areas, but not a religious initiate or academic researcher, I found that it struck a nice balance. These temples are difficult places to take photographs in, so even if one has visited, one has to rely on memories rather than personal photos. The author has taken the time to take nice pictures and get appropriate permissions (one hopes) and also reproduces some archival material from Tibet. I spend time with this book reminiscing about prior travels, and planning my strategy for my next visit to the area to get the most out of this amazing artwork. Also, this book was a fantastic value at my neighborhood used book store. There are monumental coffee table books on Alchi and Tabo, and the out-of-print Snellgrove books on Ladakh that are very expensive. I found this book to be on a par and it covers most of the major and minor temple sites.
