On the morning of 26 August, flash floods came down through central Nepal and took whole settlements with them. Hundreds of people are dead and close to two thousand are still missing. Thousands of families have lost their homes and their land.

Those numbers were accurate when this was written and have moved every day since. If you are able to send something, this is where it should go.

Rescue and relief work is underway now, and rehabilitation will run for months after that. Money that arrives early does more than money that arrives late.

Where to give

The Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund is the government account for exactly this kind of emergency. It funds rescue, immediate relief and rehabilitation, and it is the account the government has asked people to give to.

From outside Nepal. The fund takes international cards through a portal run by the Nepal Clearing House at pmdrf.nchl.com.np. You can give in US dollars or in rupees. It accepts Visa and Mastercard, and also NepalPay QR, connectIPS, eSewa, AliPay+ and UPI from India, so it works from most of the places Nepalis actually live. Donations are non-refundable, so check the amount before you confirm. If your card issuer will not clear a large donation, the portal points you to a SWIFT transfer through your own bank instead.

From inside Nepal. Scan the fund’s QR code, or transfer to one of its bank accounts. The Office of the Prime Minister publishes the full list, with account numbers and SWIFT codes, in its public notice.

If you would rather give to an organisation working directly in the affected districts, that is just as worthwhile. We are pointing at the fund because it is the most direct route to work that is already happening.

What we are doing

We have sent an initial contribution of one lakh rupees to the fund.
